2026

 Bumble Bee Event

FOLKS sponsored an educational talk on Wisconsin Bumble Bees.  Guest speaker Maggie Honig, Wisconsin DNR Bumble Bee Ambassador for the Bumble Bee Brigade. We not only learned how to identify the various Bumble Bee species but enjoyed hands-on experience viewing and photographing them in the beautiful Fish Camp native gardens. Maggie explained the life cycle of the Bumble Bee and the many ways we can protect them by providing a native garden habitat and avoiding pesticides.

Fish Sticks

FOLKS members constructed 4 large log  fish stick style habitats.  The DNR feels Fish sticks are in - lake best practice habitat structures that create food, shelter, and breeding areas for aquatic species especially fish.  The fish structures were lowered into Lake Kegonsa on August 6th. Members can send an email requesting GPS coordinates of the cribs to Kegonsafolks@gmail.com.  FOLKS would like to thank the following businesses for their support:  Heartwood Tree Company (logs and tree tops),  Quam's Marine & Motorsports (tree storage and lakeside construction area), Manke Enterprises (barge and crew to lower fish sticks into the lake) and WI DNR Fisheries staff.

Viewing Scopes

FOLKS purchased and Dane county parks helped install two Viewing Scopes in Fish Camp park this spring.   A double scope with an ADA wheelchair accessible scope was installed on the accessible fishing pier and the single scope was installed on the boardwalk bump out facing Lake Kegonsa and can also be used to view the Osprey nest on the power line.

Electrofishing Demonstration

Folks hosted a Fisheries Management demonstration that was put on by DNR staff.  They explained methods on how they capture fish, what they do with fish data and how they make decisions on fish stocking, fishing regulations

Duck Houses

Folks members have taken over the upkeep of 6 Wood Duck houses along the Yahara River just up river from Fish Camp Park.  Members have also installed 4 new Wood Duck houses east of FIsh Camp park - two north of the bike path and 2 south of the bike path.

NetHouse Board Replacement

FOLKS members replaced the rotten lower boards on the east side of the Net house.  Custom board were created by the Amish to match the existing boards.

Turtle Crossing Signs

FOLKS added turtle crossing signs along WIlliams Drive to raise awareness.

International Crane Foundation Tour

FOLKS hosted a guided tour of the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo.

Dane County Humane Society Wildlife Center Volunteer Day

Folks members volunteered at the Dane County Humane Society which rehabilitates wounded and hurt animals from the area including turtles, raptors and waterfowl.

Fish Cribs & Sticks

Net House Improvements

FOLKS members refurbished the interior of the nethouse at Fish Camp so it can be used for future events.

Fish Camp Native Gardens

FOLKS members have installed and maintained 3 native gardens at FISH Camp county park.
