About the event

  • Introduction to Fisheries Management in Dane County by Mitchell Trow from the DNR (15 to 30 minutes) – this will be a small talk right next to the Yahara River / Lake Kegonsa.

    • Describe their jobs at DNR: what they do on a day-to-day basis

    • Explain methods on how they capture fish

    • Describe their survey schedules (Example: how often they sample fish from Lake Kegonsa)

    • Describe what they do with fish data and how they make decisions on fish stocking, fishing regulations, etc.

  • Electrofishing Demonstration (30 minutes) – this will show people an example of what they do in the field on area lakes

    • They would drive around in their electrofishing boat near shore to allow people to see the process of electrofishing.

    • During this portion they would be collecting all fish species they see.

    • After they finish up electrofishing, they will show spectators what fish were captured and describe how to identify them if people aren’t familiar. They will also can discuss diets, habitats, etc for each species. they will also comment in general how each species is doing in the Madison chain. If kids are in the audience, they will be given an opportunity to hold a fish and take a picture.

  • Questions – people can ask DNR staff questions regarding Lake Kegonsa or fish related questions for Dane, Rock, or Green Counties.


Rain will cause the event to be cancelled.

Notification of a rain cancellation will be sent out the morning of the event.
